Unusual gavel, with walnut handle, and silver-painted wooden mallet with tomahawk wedge on one side and hammer head on the other. By repute this was used by officers at meetings of The Improved Order of Red Men, America's oldest fraternal organization, still in existence today, which uses the customs, implements and terminology of the Native Americans as part of its rituals. It is possible, however, that it is a Masonic chisel mallet, based on an instrument for stone cutting.
