Charming original drawing of a small bird perched on the flowering stalk of a wildflower. The bird has tufts above its eyes, and is possibly a juvenile. The drawing records the physiognomy and patterning of the bird in meticulous detail.

Charles Emile Heil was an American painter, etcher, illustrator and teacher who studied in his native Boston and in Paris. He was noted for his landscape and animal subjects. Heil was the member of a number of artist associations including the Boston Watercolor Club, the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Society of American Etchers and the American Federation of the Arts. His works are in many museum collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the State Gallery of Munich, the Library of Congress and the Bibliothèque Nationale of Paris.
