A portrait of the famous explorer Captain Cook with dates of his voyages below, along with his birth and death date. Portrait set in an oval, decorated with pair of South Pacific paddles and anchor in shield supported within festooned drapes suspended on oval paterae. Issued as a frontispiece to a folio publication of his voyages.
Inscription below the portrait reads:
Captain Cook, F.R.S. His first voyage performed in the years 1768. 1769. 1770. 1771. Second voyage 1772. 1773. 1774. 1775. Third voyage 1776. 1777. 1778. 1779. 1780. He was born at Marton in the North Riding of Yorkshire, Nov 3rd 1728 & Unfortunately killed by the Savages of the Island, Owhyhee, Feb 14th 1779.
Alexander Hogg was a bookseller in London, from c. 1778-1824. He was prominent as a publisher of magazines and widely advertised works known as "Paternoster Row numbers" (Paternoster Row being the address of his shop).
