The transition from sail to steam in ocean shipping is vividly symbolized in this composition of a packetship with its large numbers of sails, and a steamer ship with passengers, both on the high seas.
The New York & Liverpool United States' Mail Steamship Company, commonly known as the Collins Line, was founded in New York around 1848 and made their first voyages between New York and Liverpool in 1849. The Baltic, pictured here, was a 2100-ton ship that sailed under Collins from 1850 to 1858. It was sold to North Atlantic SS Company in 1859 after the Collins line went out of business. The ships accepted cargo and passengers.
