Wide horizontal detailed panorama view of the Nantucket Island shoreline, showing closely-packed houses, church steeples, and a pier in the harbor of island town, as seen from the dunes of Monomoy.  It is signed and dated by the artist in the plate, and is in a vintage, possibly original, dark stained hardwood frame.

The period from 1825 to 1900 was the heyday of lithographed views of American towns. Historians estimate that in excess of 3,000 city views may have been produced nationwide during this period, some from ground level, some as aerial views. Some of these views were commissioned to promote settlement and development of towns, especially as part of the Westward Expansion of the United States, but they were also purchased by residents and businesses as emblems of civic pride.  Sometimes the artist's final drawing was used to sell advance subscriptions of copies from citizens, local businesses and other customers before committing to publication.

Wendell F. Macy was an American painter based in Massachusetts, known for his coastal landscapes, and paintings of other maritime subjects such as ships, shipwrecks and dunes.
