Peaceful view of Garretson's Creek (sometimes spelled Gerritsen’s) along the southern shore of Brooklyn, in the Sheepshead Bay area, with a blue sailboat anchored in the middle distance by the sandy shore. The diffuse warm light of the sky is reflected in the placid water. This painting is from a group of works by Molleson from the 1890s to 1916 at various locations in and around parts of Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens. At the time it was painted, the area around the creek consisted of marshes.
Susan H. Molleson was a watercolorist, known for her paintings of Long Island, New York City and the Hudson River Valley, as well as genre pictures, nudes and illustrations. She studied with William Merritt Chase at his Shinnecock School at Hampton Bays, Long Island and at the Adelphi School of Art. At the turn of the century she lived in Brooklyn, later moving to the Newburgh, New York, area.
